Alright, my bad on this one, guys.

I had a few comments saying I got the weather wrong on Friday, and honestly, fair.

I basically looked at my iPhone, saw the little partly cloudy icon, and rolled with it. Or at least I think that’s what happened. Either way, it was pretty gloomy for most of the weekend, so not exactly my finest work as the unpaid weather department over here.

And maybe this is just me, but I also did not notice the BottleRock effect quite as much as I expected this year.

Of course it was busier. I am not saying town was empty or anything. But honestly, it felt a little quieter than usual, or at least a little less chaotic. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe the crowds were moving differently. Maybe I just did a decent job maneuvering around the epicenter.

Regardless, we made it through.

And now it is back to business as usual, which I am actually pretty excited about, because summer in Napa is one of my favorite times of year.

So today is a bit of a catch-up issue.

Nothing too crazy. Just getting reoriented after the long weekend, checking what is open or closed today, and looking at a few things coming up around town.

Here’s your Napa Lowdown Trivia for the week - and this one is mostly just to see who’s been paying attention downtown:

How many cranes are currently up around the First Street construction project?

A. 0
B. 1
C. 2
D. 3

When the Road Closures Should Let Up

By Monday, town should start feeling a little more normal again.

The City’s BottleRock notice says the main daytime and nighttime road closures and traffic restrictions were scheduled for Friday through Sunday, May 22-24. So by Monday morning, the biggest traffic-control pieces should be winding down, even if downtown still has a little post-festival hangover energy.

And with La Onda canceled this year, there is not another big Napa Valley Expo festival weekend coming right behind it on May 30-31.

So in theory, this should be the week where town gets to take one big collective exhale.

The signs can come down. The tape can get packed away. The makeshift parking lots can start turning back into normal lots or grassy fields. And hopefully, no one has to stand in a vest in the middle of an intersection directing confused festival traffic for a little while.

Basically, the few square miles around the BottleRock epicenter should start acting a little less like an event operations map and a little more like Napa again.

A Short Week, Technically

Monday holidays are always a little weird, and Memorial Day is definitely one of those “open, closed, maybe open, maybe not” days.

So here’s what that means for us.

Closed on Monday: Napa County government offices, City of Napa offices, Napa County Library locations, Napa Valley Unified schools, post offices, regular mail delivery, banks/Federal Reserve services, and Vine Transit routes.

Also worth knowing: Napa parking meter/time-limit rules do not apply on city holidays like Memorial Day, though I would still read posted signs and not take that as permission to get creative with red curbs, driveways, loading zones, or anything obvious.

Trash/recycling: Good news - this one should be normal. Napa Recycling says service is only delayed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day, and they provide normal service on other holidays, including Memorial Day.

Probably open, but check hours: grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, big-box stores, gas stations, and most private businesses. Those are usually more case-by-case than government services, so this is one of those days where it is worth checking before you drive across town and discover the handwritten “closed for the holiday” sign.

In short: if it is government, school, mail, library, banking, or transit related, assume Monday is not your day. If it is food, gas, shopping, or a private business, assume it might be open - but maybe not on normal hours.

A Quick Graduation Traffic Warning

Graduation season is one of those things that is beautiful if you are part of it and mildly confusing if you are just trying to drive across town.

So consider this your heads-up: next week brings a run of local ceremonies, proud families, decorated cars, and a few very busy parking lots.

Here’s the schedule:

  • Napa Valley College already held its 83rd annual commencement on Friday, May 15, at Memorial Stadium.

  • Napa Valley Adult Education graduates on Monday, June 1, at 6 p.m. at Evans Auditorium.

  • Valley Oak High School graduates on Tuesday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.

  • New Technology High School graduates on Tuesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

  • Napa High School graduates on Wednesday, June 3, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

  • Vintage High School graduates on Thursday, June 4, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

  • American Canyon High School graduates on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. at Wolf Den Stadium.

In short: congratulations to everyone entering cap-and-gown season - and condolences in advance to anyone trying to park near Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening.

That’s all - a little shorter, a little lighter, and mostly just a “let me get 2.5 minutes of your time so we can all remember what week it is and move on” kind of issue.

Trivia answer for today: C. 2 Cranes Up on First St.

Our new Napa Skyline - Also, yes, I reused an older photo, so don’t mind that - things are definitely much further along now.

Anyway, I hope your short week starts smoothly, your errands are not secretly closed, and your drive near Memorial Stadium next week is emotionally and logistically manageable.

I’ll see you Friday.

Callie
